I’ve never been a big fan of McAfee, and this is just icing on the cake… Seems that due to a recent update, McAfee is killing svchost.exe – a common Windows XP process. This causes the machine to reboot constantly.
There is an unverified fix for this (off of twitter):
boot to safe mode, rename mcshield.exe, reboot, run Virus Console, pick Tools -> Rollback DAT, name back to mcshield, reboot
This in theory should work, but I cannot test because I don’t use McAfee. I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials, and suggest switching from McAfee to this. If so, follow the steps above, but instead of rolling back the DAT – uninstall McAfee, and install Microsoft Security Essentials.
