Here at EverydayNerd, Firefox is used on a daily basis.  One thing that makes Firefox great, is the fact that it can be customized extensively to the users preferences.  Here, I’m going to show you how to install Add-ons, or Extensions, into Firefox.

First, obviously, you have to have Firefox installed.  If you don’t have it, go here to download it. [Download Firefox]

While running Firefox, browse to http://addons.mozilla.org.  Here, you can search for, and install add-ons to your hearts content.  For today’s example, we are going to install Download Status Bar – a nice download utility that shows current downloads in the bottom status bar of Firefox, instead of in a separate window.

With just a simple keyword search, I find the extension I’m looking for.  Simply click the Green Add to Firefox button, to install.  You will be prompted with a dialog box, asking you to confirm the installation – click Install.

Once installed, Firefox will have to be restarted.  When back open, you can configure your new Add-on by going to Tools, Add-ons.  This is not neccessary, unless you wish customize the behaviour of the add-on.

In this case, Download Statusbar works the way I wish, right out of the box.  When I download a file, it puts a nice little statusbar across the bottom of Firefox, showing active, and finished downloads.  Once completed, you can simply double click to open the file, or right click the file for more options.
