Create a font of your own handwriting

I was just talking to some friends of mine that past week, and we were talking about how hard it is to write letters, and how much easier it is to type them. I’ve seen commercial software that does this before, but I found a website that does it for free! Print the template page, write each letter out, scan it to your computer, upload to their website, and BAM! There’s your font!

My handwriting is pretty messy, and I did the template in a hurry with a fat sharpie (I’d use a fine tip sharpie if I were you) and this is what the outcome is:

This sure makes letter writing a whole lot easier!!!

Image Re-size for Windows 7/Vista/XP

Have a picture you need to resize in a hurry? No problem! Microsoft has released an updated version of it’s Image Resizer. Just right click on an image file, or many images, and choose to either copy/resize, or resize the original.

This is a really nice utility, and for any picture enthusiast, this is a must have!

Windows Live Movie Maker

Windows XP’s Movie Maker, was not included in Windows Vista / Windows 7, and left recent Windows customers without any type of free movie making software – until now.

Change Windows 7 Logon Screen

There are two ways to change the Windows 7 logon screen (is it me, or does it look like Twitter designed it?): The hard way, and the easy way. I’m going to show you the easy way.

The Tweaks.com Logon Changer for Windows 7 provides an easy way to customize the logon screen background with just a few clicks. Simply download the free application, run it and click Change Logon Screen.

Prevent Windows From Shutting Down with Shutdown Guard

Now, you can safeguard your PC against this with Shutdown Guard! Just a little tray application that prevents your computer from restarting, shutting down, or even logging off! Nice huh? Written for Windows XP, the author has not tested on Vista, it did not work for me on Vista Business.

When a shutdown, log off, or restart is detected, Shutdown Guard will prompt if you want to continue. Only when confirmed will it continue the shutdown sequence.

Replace Vista’s Annoying UAC with Norton UAC (Beta)

Vista’s UAC can be annoying, and although I’ve shared with you how to make it less annoying, Norton (Symantec) has come up with a replacement UAC that is makes it much better!

With one BIG feature – “Don’t ask me again” I think I’m in love! There are several programs I run during the course of the day that the UAC prompts me. I run them every day I don’t need to be prompted to open the command prompt, or and administrative mmc window! Also, it’s fast! Much faster than the default Windows UAC.

Thanks to Norton UAC Replacement, I’m running UAC-less on the daily apps that I use, but still have the protection from of UAC for everything else! Although it is in Beta, Norton UAC Replacement is solid, and I have had no issues so far – I’ve been running it for about two weeks now.

Backup all your Drivers with Double Driver

If you have ever had to reinstall Windows, you know what a pain it can sometimes be to find drivers. There always seems to be a driver that is hard to find. Double Driver, is a nice little utility that creates a backup of all you drivers (something you do BEFORE you re-install Windows).

This may be a program that you only use a couple of times, but it can save you hours of a headache!

By Request: Cleaning your Registry – How and Why?

The Windows Registry. Most people cringe when they hear this, or are afraid of even messing with it, until they see that ad on the Internet claiming that their computer is slow, and they need to buy their registry cleaner! Heck yeah! Whip out your Credit Card, and fire that bad boy up right? Well….

The Registry is basically a database, holding information for the entire operating system, it’s programs, and settings. If you were to look at any given registry, it would be hundreds of thousands of lines long (mine is 1.9 million lines long in Vista Ultimate). With this in mind, even a 100 or so keys in the registry that are “dirty” are not going to slow your computer down in a noticeable manner. Now that being said, if you have a corrupt key for an application, it may cause issues with that particular application, for sure, but a registry cleaner isn’t going to fix those issues!

So, is cleaning out your registry going to speed up your computer? Doubt it. Should you clean your registry anyway? Yes, but don’t stop there!

What do I use to clean my registry? CCleaner. It’s a free, easy to use, and very good system cleaner. Not only does it clean your registry, it will also clean up browser, application, temp, and java junk files, and even comes with an application remover – it’s faster than using the one in Add/Remove Programs! Using CCleaner on your system can definitely speed up a sluggish computer.

How often should you run CCleaner? That is entirely up to you. I usually run it about once a month. Some people run it daily, and others weekly. This part is entirely up to you, but I wouldn’t go over a month between cleanings.

One thing to remember when cleaning the registry; make sure to ALWAYS make a backup! CCleaner prompts you to do so, before making any changes to the registry.

My only gripe with CCleaner, is during the install, it wants to install the Yahoo! toolbar. I HATE installers that always want to throw toolbars in my browser!!!!

Fleace – The Flickr-Enabled Automatic Wallpaper Changer

There are some really cool pictures on Flickr (I personally like the HDR effect). I also like wallpaper. Not your built in Windows wallpaper either. I like really cool wallpaper – the kind that when someone sees your desktop they say "Wow! That’s a cool background!"

That being said, I tend to change my background quite often. I ran across Fleace, which is an automatic wallpaper changer. Unlike programs to do the same thing, Fleace runs at startup, and then terminates. It doesn’t run in the system tray taking up resources.

Fleace is completely customizable, allowing you to choose what type of background you want; like a random picture from the "Most Interesting" on Flickr, or you can set your own tag, and only get something you want.

Everyone needs a good CD/DVD burning program, but nobody really wants to pay a really good one like Nero! Don’t get me wrong, Nero is a great program, but if you just need a burning application, no frills, just does the job, then InfraRecorder is the one for you!

InfraRecorder has all of the best features of any retail burning app, but with the sweet price of free!

Create custom data, audio and mixed-mode projects and record them to physical discs as well as disc images.

Get your desktop organized with MS Desktops

I’m a HUGE fan of Sysinternals line of products by Mark Russinovich. Since being "aquired" by Microsoft, Mark has been pumping out some really great stuff! I could blog for a straight month on nothing but his tools, and still not give them justice! They are by far, some of the best tools any nerd could use!

So… his latest tool is called Desktops. This allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Now I can have certain RDP sessions on one desktop, email and documents on another, and Firefox and IM on another!

Desktops runs in the tray, and allows switching to the virtual desktops via hotkey, or clicking the icon, and selecting the desktop.
