Sync iPhone Calendar with Google using CalDev

Syncing my iPhone with work (Microsoft Exchange) is great, but I still wanted a to view personal calendar from Google Calendar to be synced to my iPhone too.  And yes, I know you can use ActiveSync to sync Calendar on the iphone.  This can be done by adding the CalDev calendar sync!

First, click the settings button on the home screen, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars:

Select Add Account, then Other,

Now select Add CalDev Account:

Enter the following information:

  • Server:  www.google.com
  • User Name:  Your Google account email address (can be your Google Apps email address)
  • Password:  Ummm… your Google account password…
  • Description:  Google Calendar (or whatever you want to put here)

Tap the Next button in the top right, and that’s it!  I did a quick test, and added an items from both Exchange and Google Calendar, and within 1-2 minutes, it was on synced to my iPhone!

That was just dirty Microsoft…

I really hate “sneaky” installs.  Some software will try to install a browser toolbar, change your search engine, or change your home page.  Well, now I can add Microsoft to the list.  I installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Tech Preview, and it changed my browser home page to MSN, and changed my search engine to Bing.  I use about:black as my home page, and Google as my search engine.  So I had to go back in and change it back to what I wanted…  Read this… My computer, My settings…  At least ask me when I install your software if I want to change my settings…  I mean common Microsoft, this crap I expect from other companies, but this is just low… I hope that when the final release comes out, this isn’t going to be implemented…

Exchange 2010 & Office 2010 “Visual Pressroom” from Microsoft

Microsoft has posted a "Visual Pressroom" for their Upcoming Exchange 2010, Office 2010 and Office Web Applications.

Office Web Applications:

  • Editing & Viewing PowerPoint presentations in PowerPoint Web application
  • Editing & Viewing Word documents in Word Web application
  • Editing & Viewing Excel spreadsheets in Excel Web application
  • Editing & Viewing OneNote notes in OneNote Web application

Exchange 2010 and Office 2010:

  • Conversation View. To reduce inbox clutter, Exchange 2010 provides an enhanced Conversation View that streamlines inbox navigation by automatically organizing message threads based on the natural conversation flow between parties.
  • Ignore Conversation. This e-mail “mute button” allows people to remove themselves from an irrelevant e-mail string, reducing unwanted e-mail and runaway reply-all threads.
  • Voice Mail Preview. Exchange 2010 further enhances voice mail functionality by delivering speech-to-text voice mail, allowing users to receive voice mail previews in their inbox.
  • Outlook Web Access premium support is available for Mozilla Firefox & Apple Safari.
  • MailTips warn people before they commit an e-mail faux pas, such as sending mail to a large distribution group, among other things. MailTips alert people if they do not have permission to send to certain recipients, if a message may be rejected or if a recipient is out of the office, among other things.
